My PD goal is a comibination of needs # 2 and 3 above. I want to increase my content knowledge in order to create more / better inquiry based assignments.
Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below describe you goal and plan in two paragraphs.
In the first paragraph, describe a rationale your professional development goal. This rationale should describe the goal, the personal need that it will address, and how this goal benefits your students and your perspective school.
I. Professional Development Goal
Currently, my CT and I are participating in a professional development program called Project Narragansett. My CT and I have partcipated in 2 seminars so far and will particpate in one more. At these seminars we have increased our knowledge of Narragansett Bay which has been very helpful as we have an elective called Narragansett Bay Studies. Also, as part of the program, we recieved two free field trips for our students. These field trips brought our students to the Bay where we participated in hands on inquiry tasks such as a water quality sampling, and survey of a rocky intertidal zone. This program has taught me how much more I have to learn about specific courses I will be teaching and how by increasing my content knowledge I will be able to increase by students knowledge. This relates to RIBTS 1, specifically 1.3. This program also taught me that students become a lot more invested in learning when the tasks are inquiry based, hands on, and related to their life. This relates to RIBTS 2, specifically 2.6, and 2.7. Therefore my PD goal is to increase my content knowledge and use that to create inquiry based assignments.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
In order to achieve my PD goal listed above, I need to participate in Professional Development programs, and/or take more classes. PD programs are an excellent way to increased content knowledge in specific areas. Also, their are many such programs available and many are free. If I find that my content knowledge is lacking in a specifc area I could also take a college course to strengeth my skills. I then plan to take what I have learned from these programs / classes and use them to develop inquiry based assignments. By being an expert on a topic I will be better able to design assignments that will be hands on and connected to my students lives. My ultimate plan is to increase my students knowledge by increasing my own first.
